In our January meeting, we will explore the following article which will drive the meeting's discussion, linking back to Stoic teachings.
Link to article: The Demoralized Mind.
Please do your best to pre-read the article so we can delve into the discussion together.
Questions to contemplate:
1. The Existential Compass Does Stoicism provide the "philosophy of life" that prevents demoralization, or can it become just another thing we consume?
2. Internal vs. External Goods How does focusing on virtue and "what's up to us" protect against manufactured desires and consumer disappointment?
3. Individual Practice in a Sick Culture Can we practise Stoicism authentically within a pathological culture? Is it resistance or just coping?
4. Attention vs. Trance How do we cultivate Stoic mindfulness (prosoche) in a culture designed to distract us?
